Green Fluorescnt Protein Maya, Renderman June 2007
GFP is a small protein derived form a jellyfish, with the peculiar property of shining green when hit a UV radiation.
Since its discovery in the mid '90s scientists have used it extensively, in particular constructing hybrid proteins labelled with GFP so that when cells are seen in the UV microscope, GFP will shine and reveal the protein original location in the cell. On our website www.scivis.ifc.cnr.it you can see an example of GFP-labelled mitochondria, as well as a schematic view of the architecture of the protein and a movie showing GFP in all its shining beauty.
This image was obtained by importing atomic coordinates in Maya and rendered with RenderMan.
